MRI Scans in Miranda

Shire Medical Imaging provides MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) services for patients across the Sutherland Shire, using advanced technology to produce highly detailed images of soft tissues, joints, muscles, nerves, organs and the spine. Unlike X-Ray and CT imaging, MRI uses powerful magnets and radio waves rather than ionising radiation, making it an important tool for diagnosing a wide range of conditions.

All MRI examinations are performed by accredited MRI technologists and interpreted by experienced radiologists, ensuring accurate imaging and timely reporting.

Common MRI Examinations

  • Brain and Neurological MRI
  • Spine MRI
  • Joint and Musculoskeletal MRI
  • Abdominal and Pelvic MRI
  • Soft Tissue Imaging

MRI is often used when greater soft tissue detail is required than can be achieved with X-ray or CT imaging.

Preparing for Your MRI Scan

To ensure your examination proceeds safely and efficiently:

  • Wear comfortable clothing without metal fasteners where possible
  • Leave jewellery, watches and other metal items at home
  • Avoid eye makeup and certain hair products for head MRI examinations
  • Fast for four hours prior to abdominal MRI examinations, unless advised otherwise
  • Follow any preparation instructions provided when booking

If you are concerned about confined spaces, please let us know before your appointment. Your referring doctor may be able to arrange medication to help you feel more comfortable during the examination.

MRI Safety Screening

MRI uses a powerful magnetic field, so all patients complete a safety screening questionnaire before their scan.

Please advise our team if you have:

  • A pacemaker or cardiac device
  • Cochlear implants
  • Aneurysm clips
  • Infusion pumps or implanted devices
  • Metal fragments or previous metal injuries
  • Any possibility of pregnancy

Patients who have worked with metal, including welding, grinding or metal fabrication, may require additional screening before their examination.

FAQs

Yes. All MRI’s require an appointment. Simply call our clinic or send through your referral via our appointment request form, and our friendly Booking Team will arrange a convenient appointment and provide any preparation instructions you may need before your visit.

You will lie comfortably on a padded table that moves into the MRI scanner. The scanner is open at both ends and well-lit inside. During the examination, you will hear a series of tapping and knocking sounds, and ear protection or headphones will be provided. Remaining still helps ensure the clearest possible images.

Some MRI examinations require a gadolinium-based contrast injection to provide additional diagnostic information. If contrast is recommended for your scan, our team will explain the process and discuss any relevant medical history with you beforehand.

No. MRI is a painless examination. Some patients may feel warm during parts of the scan or find it uncomfortable to remain still for an extended period, but the procedure itself is not painful.

MRI does not use ionising radiation and is considered a safe imaging examination for most patients. Our comprehensive screening process helps ensure MRI is suitable for your individual circumstances.

Your MRI images will be reviewed by a specialist radiologist, with reports typically provided to your referring practitioner within one to two business days. Urgent examinations are prioritised when clinically required.
